Due to COVID-19 restrictions at our partner hospitals, at this time, we are asking for completed pillowcase donations to not be laundered and bagged when donated to our chapters. ***It is important to wash the fabric before sewing pillowcases, please do not use scented detergent or dryer sheets.  Once completed, pillowcases will be packaged by chapter coordinators and prepared for delivery to partner hospitals.*** Please be sure to include a note with your name and address so Ryan’s Case for Smiles can thank you properly. We much prefer for you to drop your pillowcases off in a paper bag so we can recycle the bag when we rewash the pillowcases!

Bring your donations in for Giving Tuesday, November 28th!

How To Sew A Pillowcase Directions (click here).

What kind of fabric can I use to sew pillowcases?

  • Fabric needs to be 100% cotton. Please do not use fabric with glitter or metallics.
  • Remember to use fun, colourful novelty prints! (Holiday themed, winter themed, and child prints! These pillowcases can be used year round too! Pillowcases for teenage boys and girls are always needed)
  • We do not accept ‘No-sew pillowcases’.
  • Please avoid accessory pieces like buttons, or appliqués that may come loose and pose a choking hazard for smaller children

Please make sure all pins are removed and the pillowcases are sewn properly. Fabricana is accepting Flannel pillowcases at this time. Please note, lower quality Flannels do not always last multiple washes, especially in industrial hospital washing machines, be sure to select high quality flannel if you are sewing your pillowcases from flannel.

Drop off locations will be at Fabricana Richmond (110 – 4591 Garden City Rd Richmond, BC V6X 2K4, Canada) and Fabricana Coquitlam (1348 United Blvd Coquitlam, BC V3K 6Y2, Canada) during store hours. We will be accepting drop-offs from November 5th 2023- November 28th 2023. This guarantees our volunteers enough time to wash all pillowcases and distribute them to the participating hospitals during December. Drop-off bins will be located by the front entrance.

Sewing Workshop (open)

Fabricana will be offering a 1 day sewing workshop for those who may need extra help with sewing their pillowcase or for those just looking to sew-socially! This workshop will take place November 23rd at 6pm to 8:30pm at the Coquitlam Fabricana. To participate, please sign up in person at Coquitlam Fabricana. Attendees will be given a “Pillowcase Kit” that includes all the fabric and material they need to sew their project. Each Kit will cost $15 and be provided upon arrival on November 23rd. Space is limited! Sign up quickly so you don’t lose your spot.

Come enjoy good company! Snacks and beverages will be provided.

Sewing Workshop to sew a Pillowcase

  • Thursday, November 23rd at 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm
  • Sign up in-person at Coquitlam Fabricana. Signing up costs $15.
  • The $15 will cover your “Pillowcase Kit” and reserve your spot in the workshop.
  • Attendees will need to bring their own sewing machine.

Every attendee will need to pay for a kit if they wish to attend.

Sewists interested in participating under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult and will be provided with 1 “Pillowcase Kit” when they sign up. If you do not have sewing experience but wish to attend you can sign up as a “couple” so long as one of you has basic sewing knowledge such as how to thread your machine, understanding stitch types and seam allowances, how to read a pattern, etc. Attendees signing up as a “couple” will be provided 1 “Pillowcase Kit” unless participants sign up individually.

If you are an experienced sewer please feel free to bring your own fabric to sew more pillowcases than what is supplied in our “Pillowcase Kit” so long as the material in the Kit is prioritised.

If you do not have a sewing machine but wish to participate please speak to our staff in person when you sign up. We may be able to supply a sewing machine but this is not guaranteed.

Thank you for your generosity! And happy sewing!
